“You sure this isn’t a bullet hole?” The woman in a gray jumpsuit was staring at the bumper, which had been popped off for repairs. “Looks like a bullet hole to me.”

“Weird how gravel thrown by a tire at just the right speed and angle can resemble that.” Watson looked up from digging around inside the engine, giving her a pointed stare. “You know how these things go.”

There was a pause, as she considered the damage once more. “Uh huh.”

Despite spending a fair chunk of the morning, they hadn’t succeeded in finding a repair business that fit their parameters. In a place this small, there wasn’t much of a black market, so under-the-table cash deals were met with an appropriate amount of suspicion. What they did stumble upon, through persistence and a dash of search engine fortune, was a local high school with an auto repair curriculum. Mechanics might be doing well enough to turn down cash in exchange for discretion, but teachers being under-paid was, sadly, a constant Watson could count on.

The name on the gray jumpsuit said “Terri” though whether it was hers or not was open to interpretation. She didn’t offer a name, nor did he ask, since she didn’t probe for his. He had no idea if she was a custodian, a teacher, or someone else doing secret car work. She’d just been there when they made the approach. It was a simple exchange: facilities, help, and silence in return for a few thousand dollars that had been tucked away in one of Watson’s bags. His philosophy was that it only counted as over-preparing if one didn’t need the resources, and these habits had saved his neck more than once.

Sherman was busying himself with some textbooks piled up in a corner. There were stains, torn pages, and missing covers; these were obviously the ones taken out of circulation. None of that dulled his interest as he spread them out along the floor, reading in spurts and sections, sometimes following a line across three entirely different textbooks, mumbling to himself all the while. It was disconcerting. However, considering it was Sherman, this was one of the best outcomes Watson could have hoped for. So long as he stayed out of the way and didn’t insult their host, he was welcome to read every old textbook in the state.

For the moment, Watson’s major concern was finding any trackers hidden in the convertible. There would be a few, redundancies on top of redundancies, especially considering the dangerous components inside their transport. Governments weren’t generally fond of their assets being abandoned for anyone to find, so they’d want to pick this up even if the mission went bad. Fair and reasonable, until one realized that anybody with the right clearance could get the car’s location in a few clicks. Enemies wanted to hunt down the target he was protecting, fine, that was part of the dance. But he wasn’t going to make it that easy on them. Tracking him was going to take real effort.
